Health and Social Services Minister Mark Drakeford visited the site of Cardiff University’s new £44m brain research imaging centre CUBRIC on Thursday 30th April as the project reaches an important milestone.
He met senior university staff to mark the completion of the building structure in a topping out ceremony.
The project has received £9.4m of Welsh Government investment – £3.4m towards the ultra-high field Tesla MRI scanner and an initial £6m towards development at the Maindy Road campus, in Cardiff, where CUBRIC is located.
Research carried out at the centre will help scientists to understand the causes of a range of brain diseases, including dementia, schizophrenia and multiple sclerosis. The new centre is due to open next year.
Professor Drakeford said:
“This facility will bring together Cardiff University’s world-class academics and the very latest technology in this field. I believe it will help to attract more expertise to Wales to undertake cutting-edge research.”
Economy, Science and Transport Minister Edwina Hart said:
“The Maindy Road campus and the new CUBRIC facility is an excellent example of the pioneering research being undertaken at Welsh universities. Not only will this centre allow vital medical research to be carried out but it is an important part of our growing research sector which will deliver long-term, sustainable economic and social benefits.”
