A second victory on the road for the Scarlets and a third try in two games for vice-captain Scott Williams would have warranted jubilant celebrations from the 24-year-old international centre at Saturday’s Judgement Day in the Millennium Stadium.
A 10-29 victory over Newport Gwent Dragons saw more of a feeling of relief from the Newcastle Emlyn born centre than elation with his side still needing two wins from the remaining Guinness PRO12 fixtures.
Four tries from the Scarlets (Owens, S. Williams, L. Williams, Robinson) ensured the West Wales side left the Millennium Stadium with maximum points form the encounter and move into sixth position in the PRO12 table, just a point ahead of Edinburgh Rugby.
Speaking after the game Scott Williams said: “We want to be in that sixth spot. We’re pleased with the victory but there were too many errors from us in that first half.”
Fullback Liam Williams was named Man of the Match in Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium after a barnstorming performance and was involved in everything that was good about Scarlets’ performance. He scored a try as well as creating Scott’s. Commenting on his own try Scott said: “You have to try and stay on Sanjay’s shoulder as much as you can because he can do anything. I was in the right place at the right time I think!”
With a try on the brink of half time for himself and a try just three minutes into the second half for fullback Williams Scott believes his namesake’s try was the turning point in Scarlets’ fortunes, he said: “We spoke at half time about wanting to come out and make sure that we scored first and stay in the game.
“We’re pleased to get the bonus point aswell, we need to collect as many points as we can now. We’re a little bit disappointed with some of our performances throughout the season, we have to win our remaining two games and the bonus point could prove vital.”
Scarlets will take on Cardiff Blues at Parc y Scarlets on Sunday 10th May, kick-off 4pm, in the last home game of the season.
