PUPILS from two Swansea schools have been rewarded for joining in the Show Racism the Red Card campaign.

Children from St Helen’s Primary School and Blaenymaes Primary School have been rubbing shoulders with some of the nation’s brightest sporting stars as a reward for helping to Show Racism the Red Card in their schools and communities.

Show Racism the Red Card is an anti-racism educational charity that harnesses the power of positive role models from football and other sports to engage with young people and talk about racism in their communities.

Tahmina Uddin, from St Helen’s Primary School, won a T-shirt design competition for the charity in the year one to year four category, and Niamh Phipps, from Blaenymaes Primary School, won in the age 10 and over category.

They were rewarded at a special event at the Marriot Hotel in Cardiff attended by players from football and rugby clubs across Wales; Ken Skates, Deputy Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport; and NU T General Secretary Christine Blower.

Cllr Jen Raynor, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “We have been very supportive of this charity and hundreds of youngsters have benefitted from their visits to schools as a result.

“It is just one of the ways that the local authority and schools promote harmony among pupils. Other work includes educating children of their rights and their responsibility to respect the rights of others through the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

“Well done to all the pupils who taken the SRTRC message on board and particularly to Tahmina and Niamh who have made Swansea proud with their designs.”

The event was hosted by Sport Wales and Scrum V presenter Lisa Rogers, who said: “Show Racism the Red Card works on the very basic premise that if you want to get rid of racist attitudes, the people you need to talk to are children. And it works. I’ve been to their workshops and seen for myself the huge power for good and that’s why I continue to support their awards event every year.”
