AN EGYPTIAN Mummy will soon come back to life at Swansea Museum if a Hollywood storyline comes true.
The mummy, identified as Hor, will be there when all three Night at the Museum movies are shown at the historic Victoria Road attraction on Friday May 15.
In the movies, which star Ben Stiller, all sorts of objects come back to life at a number of American museums, including the Smithsonian in Washington DC.
Hor, who was a clothier priest and scribe of the God Atum, is one of Swansea Museum’s oldest and most treasured artefacts. In the daily ritual of the temple it was his duty to change the clothing on the holy statue of the God. He lived in Akhmim in Upper Egypt between 250 and 200 B.C. during the Ptolemaic Dynasty and was named after the God Horus.
The mummy was gifted to Swansea Museum in 1888 by Field-Marshal Lord Francis Grenfell, who was born in the St Thomas area of Swansea in 1841.
The Night at the Museum movies are being shown to mark Museum at Night celebrations across the UK on Thursday May 14 and Friday May 15 when many museums are staying open late. Swansea Museum will be open until 9pm on both nights.
Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: “Swansea Museum, the oldest of its kind in Wales, is a treasure trove of artefacts and exhibitions that bring the history of the local area and the world back to life in a fun, engaging and educational way.
“Screening the three Night at the Museum movies in the attraction is a great way to mark the Museum at Night celebrations across the UK. The event, as well as plans to keep the museum open until the late evening, will attract even more visitors there who’ll doubtless plan return trips in future because of the evolving exhibition programme that caters for a huge variety of ages and interests.
“The museum is one of the many attractions across the city that help reinforce Swansea’s reputation as a hotbed of culture and learning.”
The Night of the Museum movies are being shown in order at 3.30pm, 5.30pm and 7.30pm. People who go along are being encouraged to wear historical costumes.
