The new skateboard park at Aberavon Seafront has already proved a big hit with local skaters and BMX riders.
It was designed with help from the Neath Port Talbot Youth Council and built in the same location, but constructed in a more durable concrete finish.
The original skateboard park was installed some ten years ago and has proved one of the most successful attractions in a high profile location on the seafront.
Over the last few years, various parts of the equipment had been repaired to maintain the facility, however, its metal construction and close proximity to the seafront resulted in extensive corrosion and it had reached a stage where it is beyond economic repair.
Another popular attraction, the Aquasplash toddlers’ pool has also undergone annual maintenance work ready for the Whitsun holidays. The pool area has been cleaned and repainted, and some of the rooms within the pavilion have been redecorated.
The Aquasplash is a favourite for families, attracting crowds in hot weather, and is another one of the many facilities along the beachfront which Neath Port Talbot Council has provided to cater for all ages and tastes in the community.
In the last few years, the Council has undertaken an extensive programme of improvements on the Seafront, with some funded through the European funded Green Sea Programme.
Work is also progressing well on the construction of the new leisure centre at the seafront, due for completion by the end of this year.
More than £5m has been invested in infrastructure and environmental improvements including replacement of the railings, new seating and signage, a children’s play area, and the sunken gardens.
In addition to the on-street parking bays, there are now 465 parking spaces in the new public car parks at Ocean Way, Bay View and Scarlet Avenue.
Councillor Ali Thomas OBE, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council said:
“I am delighted that we were able to replace this popular skateboard park. We know that this is an important facility that young people value.
“This is the latest in a series of improvements over the last few years that have transformed the appearance of the Seafront and contributed to its increased popularity for residents and visitors.”
