To mark St David’s Day, Alzheimer’s Society Cymru will be hosting a special, virtual ‘Singing for the Brain’ event, inviting people affected by dementia to warm up their vocal chords and try out some scales.

The hour long, live sing-along, which will be a celebration of Welsh music, language and culture, will take place on Monday 1 March 2021 between 1.30pm and 2.30pm, and will be held using Zoom.

The event is open to people living with dementia and their carers, care homes and professionals working in the health, social care and third sector. Those wanting to join should contact Alzheimer’s Society Cymru’s Dementia Connect Local Services Manager, Hayley Hogan, to confirm their place and receive the Zoom event login details, by emailing Hayley.Hogan@alzheimers.org.uk or phoning 07725 475908.

Hayley said: “Alzheimer’s Society Cymru’s ‘Singing for the Brain’ sessions are part of our new Dementia Connect service, and they provide a supportive group environment for people affected by dementia to sing a variety of songs and dance along to music which helps improve brain activity and increases well-being. You can attend from the comfort of your own home, whether you’re on your own, or with family members and friends.

“Evidence shows that music can help improve and support the mood, alertness and engagement of people with dementia, with research showing that musical memory is often retained when other memories are lost; music can help people to recall memories due to the nature of preserved memory for song and music in the brain.

“Music and social interaction has a huge positive impact on mood, and since the coronavirus pandemic has prevented ‘Singing for the Brain’ groups from happening face-to-face, Alzheimer’s Society Cymru has launched the service online, bringing together hundreds of people living with dementia every week to experience the benefits of music together during the lockdown, and ensuring they know they aren’t alone.”
