Swansea Council is appealing to motorists to treat its civil parking enforcement officers with respect or face prosecution.
The call follows on from the latest incident where a local man pleaded guilty to common assault after spitting on a parking enforcement officer who had issued the man with a penalty charge notice.
The council has received more than 300 reports from parking enforcement staff of attacks on patrols since January 2013 ranging from verbal abuse and swearing to aggressive behaviour, intimidation and assault.
One report detailed how a motorist attempted to run over the parking officer. Another had eggs thrown at another officer and there has also been a report of someone spitting at the new camera enforcement van.
Mark Thomas, Cabinet Member for Environment & Transportation, said: “This behaviour is simply not acceptable.
“Our staff need to be reassured that they are safe on the street when they are carrying out an important role within our communities.
“Parking officers play a vital role in making sure streets are not blocked by selfish and inconsiderate parking and ensure larger vehicles such as public transport can continue along their planned routes. Illegally parked cars can also create a dangerous environment for pedestrians.
“The perception is that our patrols are out there simply to generate income. This is not the case. If motorists did not park illegally then they would not receive a parking ticket.”
Cllr Thomas added: “I’m pleased that the courts are taking these offences seriously. Hopefully this case will discourage others from treating council staff in an inappropriate manner.”
