Welsh Speed Limit Change

News yesterday announced that from this summer, the Welsh government will drop the 30mph speed limit to 20mph in eight areas of Wales to reduce accidents and prevent speeding. The move is part of a pilot programme that, if successful, would be rolled out nationwide. Car Insurance Expert at Confused.com Alex Kindred says:

“Our research showed that there were already 2.5 million speeding offenses in 2019. A further fifth (20%) of drivers reported seeing or hearing more cars taking advantage of quieter roads and speeding during lockdown.

“Speed limits are there for a reason – to make our roads safer. So any initiative that aims to protect all road users should be welcomed. However, if drivers aren’t careful they may land themselves a speeding ticket, especially if they aren’t aware of the change. And with the way speeding fines are calculated, you might face far heftier fines than you realise, with the potential of paying up to 175% of your weekly income.

But knowing how much this works out as can be confusing. To see how much taking a risk could set you back, our speeding calculator works out the cost of a fine and highlights at what point you could be hit with a ban.”
