Carmarthenshire County Council has supported year seven pupils from Llanelliā€™sĀ Coedcae SchoolĀ who are undertaking theirĀ Welsh Baccalaureate.

The councilā€™sĀ community engagement officers, part of theĀ housingĀ department, have supported the comprehensive school for some years, providing community projects that pupils can get involved with as part of their studies.

The Welsh Baccalaureate course requires pupils to volunteer within their communities ā€“ something that ties in with the councilā€™sĀ Carmarthenshire Homes Standard PlusĀ programme, which encourages community engagement.

Last week, pupils carried out a litter pick in Llwynhendy as part of the CHS+ project, Pride In Your Patch.

They also took part in a survey to help the Penyfan and Llwynwhilwg Tenants and Residents Association (PLTRA) get ideas for future schemes and events.

They rounded up their community engagement day by visiting tenants at the councilā€™s Clos Llanfihangel sheltered housing scheme in Dafen, where they helped older people learn how to use iPads.

Community engagement officer Pat Evans said: ā€œIt was lovely to see the pupils get so involved in supporting their local community, and hope that ā€“ whilst helping their studies ā€“ we have instilled a sense of pride in helping others and volunteering.

ā€œThe tenants at Clos Llanfihangel were thrilled to meet the pupils, especially 94-year-old Lilian Williams, who learned how to Skype.

ā€œAll pupils who took part also earnedĀ TimecreditsĀ in return for their efforts, which they can choose to spend at a range of local attractions who participate in the scheme.ā€
