The arrival of a Pacer railcar at Cynheidre, base of the Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway, has heralded the launch of the South Wales Railcar Group to support its ongoing preservation and that of other diesel railcars at the site. Delivered on 15^th February 2021, Pacer railcar No.142 006 is the only member of the former Arriva Trains Wales ‘Valley Lines’ units to be preserved, the rest of the fleet having been scrapped. As such its internal configuration is now unique.

Established in February 2021 at the Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway to promote and support the diesel railcars based on the line, this group will be a focus for the restoration and operation of these vehicles at the railway. The group is designated as principal fundraiser for the lines diesel multiple units and will also aid the acquisition of the expertise, volunteers and the spares necessary to safeguard their future. Already comprising a group of passionate and enthusiastic individuals, the group seeks similarly motivated people to assist in returning them to their former glory and to keep them running for many years to come.

Having preserved the only class 142 from the former South Wales fleet, the Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway and the South Wales Railcar Group would now like to return it to authentic ‘Valley Lines’ condition and its distinctive livery of red, white and green. We would also like to honour the memory of the former General Manager of Valley Lines, Tom Clift, who sadly passed away unexpectedly in 2012 at the age of 58. Respected by many in the railway community, Tom was passionate about the lines that our unit served, and we feel it fitting to name it in honour of a true railwayman, gentleman and friend to so many.

On 8^th March we are launching a fundraising initiative to raise the money necessary to have the unit professionally painted into the Valley Lines livery prior to hosting a naming ceremony at the railway when it will be named ‘Tom Clift 1954 – 2012’ in honour of this popular and professional railwayman. Any surplus from the fundraiser will go towards the ongoing maintenance of the unit.
