Members of the G.I. Joe Personal Training ‘fitness-family’ from Llanelli are taking on the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge this weekend (June 6).
And they are doing it all for charity – to raise cash for the Llanelli-based autism campaign Week On The Street.
“Last year we raised more than £1,500 for Week On The Street with our log run from Sandy Water Park to Burry Port harbour – and back,” said Joe Williams, head instructor at G.I. Joe Personal Training.
“That was no mean feat as we were carrying logs – and each log weighed in excess of 50kg.
“This year our aim is to raise even more money for Week On The Street by doing something a bit more challenging!”
The Welsh Three Peaks Challenge will involve walking up (and back down!) Cadair Idris, Snowdon and Pen y Fan in 12 hours or less.
The cumulative totals of distances for the challenge are mind-boggling – 2864m (9397 ft.) of ascent and descent and about 35km (20miles) of walking plus 180 miles of driving . . . all in some of the most remote landscape in Wales.
“Lots of people spread the Welsh Three Peaks challenge over two days, but we are aiming to achieve it in 12 hours – or less,” said Joe.
Joe and fellow fitness instructor Gareth Evans had something of a trial run when they both climbed Snowdon at the start of March.
“Conditions were very poor, but we were well-equipped and ready for the bad weather and we reached the top during a blizzard and winds of up to 80mph!” Joe said.
He added: “It’s great to be doing something for charity, but it is also important for us to get some key messages across about health and fitness.
“Our aim at G.I Joe Personal Training is to help people realise that being fit and healthy isn’t just based on completing marathons, going to the gym every day or being on a diet all your life.
“It’s about being imaginative and enjoying yourself; you don’t need to be a 21-year old to be fit. We have ladies in their late 40s at our training sessions and they can put most ‘youngsters’ to shame!”
There are people from all walks of life and fitness levels taking part in the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge, with instructors Joe Williams and Gareth Evans leading the way.
G.I. Joe Personal Training was established after Joe Williams left the Army following 10 years service.
Since the company was born in October 2013 the trainers have helped a whole host of people achieve their goals, gain confidence and complete various events such as half marathons, mud runs, marathons, walks – and shed some weight in the process!
At a time where obesity is at epidemic levels, G.I. Joe is finding ways to make fitness and being healthy fun and enjoyable.
Joe added: “My aim is to help as many people as possible to make changes to their daily lives to ensure they can live a healthier and longer life.”
Running their BeachFit Body sessions at Llanelli Beach and working out of the studio based in Llangennech, the team at G.I. Joe have big plans for the future.
