UK Hair salons are reportedly fully booked on 12th April, so Vera Clinic used this information along with the number of salons, available appointments, average inches cut and more to decipher exactly how much hair the nation will be culling.

Key Takeaways that may interest your readers:

  • The average number of haircuts taking place per hair salon, per day is 56
  • There will be 2.4 million haircuts on 12th April
  • 184.8 km of hair will be cut off
  • The cut off hair joint together would span further than the distance from London to Birmingham
  • The cut off hair would go round the London Marathon track 4.4 times
  • If you attached all the hair to Rapunzel’s head, it would reach from the top of The Shard to the floor 597 times!!!

Methodology:

According to the NHBF (National Hair and Beauty Federation), there are 43,000 hair salons in the UK.

The average number of clients a hair stylist has per day is 12.

According to Statistica, the average number of full time employees per hair salon is 2.6, and the average number of part time employees is 2.1. All together that’s 4.7 employees per hair salon.

4.7 employees x 12 client appointments per day = 56.4 hair cuts per hair salon, per day.

56.4 hair cuts x 43,000 hair salons in the UK = 2,425,200 haircuts on the 12th April.

If each person gets 3 inches cut on average, that’s 3 x 2,425,200 inches of hair cut off, which is a total of 7,275,600 inches of hair cut.

There are 39.37 inches in a metre, so that’s 184,800 metres of hair, which is 184.8 km of hair in total.

Distance from London to Birmingham = 163 km

Marathon = 42 km

The Shard – 309.6 m

  • The cut off hair, if all lined up (184.8 km), would span longer than the distance from London to Birmingham (163 km)
  • The cut off hair would reach round the London Marathon track 4.4 times. (184.8 ÷ 42 = 4.4)
  • If you attached all the hair to Rapunzel’s head, it would reach from the top of The Shard to the floor 597 times!!! (184,800 ÷ 309.6 = 597).
