Responding to this morning’s labour market statistics from the ONS, Shavanah Taj, Wales TUC General Secretary, said:

“While today’s statistics suggest a broadly stable jobs market, the true picture for workers in Wales is hugely challenging.

“These figures mask the fact that for tens of thousands of people across Wales their working lives have been on hold for the last year. Even with the support of the furlough scheme, for many this has meant real financial insecurity and worry about what the future holds.

“What matters now is that all those who have lost their jobs in recent months and those who are coming off furlough get the financial support and practical help they need.

“And we must also ensure that our politicians have learnt the central lesson of the past decade: that you can’t build a just and prosperous economy on the back of poor quality, insecure jobs”
