Two members of staff from Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli, are raising funds to create a reflection garden for Ward 1.

On Sunday, 9th May, Sioned Howells and Santi Wassel ran from Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen to Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli, which is approximately 18.7 miles.

Having both worked on the Covid-19 ward during the pandemic, they have decided to fundraise towards creating a reflection garden for patients and staff to take time out and relax. The garden will provide a sense of peace and tranquillity, which is much needed after the difficult 14 months they have had to face through the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sioned Howells, Sister on the elective orthopaedics ward in PPH, said “Having worked on the Covid-19 Ward during the pandemic we are raising money for a Covid 19 reflection garden in PPH for staff and patients, remembering the ones we lost and for families who sadly lost a family member to Covid-19. As we are both keen runners, we thought it would be a great idea to run from Glangwili Hospital to Prince Philip Hospital raising money and getting our weekly Sunday long run in at the same time.”

Santi Wassel, Health Care Support Worker on Ward 1 at PPH, said “I came to Wales with my wife 20 years ago and we stayed as we fell in love with this country. When I was furloughed last year, I wanted to help and do something for the community, so I applied for a job in the NHS. I started working in the community with the ART team and moved to ward 1 in December. I’ve never done a job more fulfilling than this one, I wish I found it earlier in life.”
