BEST wildflower garden and best communal garden are among the categories in a blooming great competition taking place this summer.
Entries are open until July 10 for Swansea Council’s annual gardening competition for its tenants and leaseholders.
Other categories include best garden, best young gardener, best newcomer and overall winner. There’s also a judges choice award and a best edible garden category where the judging will be based on the quality and variety of edible produce.
Cllr David Hopkins, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said: “Our annual gardening competition, now in its 16th year, has been a great success since its inception. It generates a healthy competitive spirit and boosts the appearance of communities across Swansea during the summer months.
“You don’t need to be an expert gardener to enter, and you don’t even need a big garden – all that’s needed is enough space for some pots or containers, and some colourful ideas to brighten up your outdoor spaces.
“We welcome all our regular gardeners but we also want to encourage newcomers to gardening, young people who want to give it a try for the first time, or groups who have a shared or communal garden. By entering this competition, you can have your hard work and talents recognised and you may even win a cash prize.”
The winner of the young gardener category will receive £25. The winners of the other categories will receive £75 and the overall winner will receive £250.
Entry forms and full details of the categories and rules are available at all Swansea Council District Housing Offices. You can also visit www.swansea.gov.uk/housing or call 01792 635045.
