Neath Port Talbot Council’s Recycling Mascot has been making sure that young pupils moving from primary to secondary education make the most of their opportunities.
The Local Authority’s Recycling team and their ever popular mascot Greenbob Squarebox will be offering some fun recycling activities at the Crucial Crew event next week, as part of National Recycle Week. The team has a series of activities lined up which will give pupils a chance to discover how important recycling is.
The annual Crucial Crew event at Margam Country Park is organised by Safer NPT and is aimed at students who are about to leave primary education. Held this year between 15and 26June, every primary school within NPT will have an opportunity to take part, with last year’s event seeing a total of 1501 children attending.
The event takes a partnership approach to teaching the year 6 pupils to understand and deal with risks in their environment that they may face as their independence grows.
A number of public bodies and private sector organisations, including South Wales Police, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue, RNLI, Western Power Distribution and the NPT Road Safety Team will offer interactive and informative workshops. Secondary school students from a number of Neath Port Talbots schools will also be on hand to talk about the transition in their own terms and offer some activities.

“Extra curriculum events such as the Crucial Crew play a vital part in helping children through what can be a challenging time, as they make the transition from primary to secondary school. I am delighted to see so many organisations coming together to support them at this important stage in their lives.”
The Crucial Crew event is sponsored annually by TATA steel, and is supported by British Red Cross, Calan DVS, Food Standards Agency, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue, NPT Early Intervention and Prevention, NPT Play Works, NPTCBC Road Safety, NPTCBC Recycling, Port Talbot and Afan Women’s Aid, RNLI, South Wales Police, SWTRA Transport, Ti Hafan, Western Power Distribution, and WCADA
