Fitness trainer and ex-rugby player Scott Maynard is organising a 24-hour running challenge to raise money for the Special Care Baby Unit at Glangwili Hospital.

Dozens of members of Scott’s gym, SM9 Fitness, which is in Peniel, near Carmarthen, will be joining him for the fundraising event, on Friday, 16th and Saturday, 17th July.

Starting at 9am on the Friday, members of the gym will be running a one-mile loop around Peniel from the door of the gym and back. At least one member will be on the run during the whole 24 hours, until the 9am finish on the Saturday morning.

Scott, 28, said: “We will be running to raise as much money as possible for the Special Care Baby Unit.

“Between 30 and 50 gym members, ranging in age from teenagers to people in their sixties, will be taking part in the challenge, in 20-minute running slots at their own pace.

“Raising funds for local charities is important to the community, especially after the last 12 months.

“A close friend recently had a baby, who was cared for on the Special Care Baby Unit. The gym also runs Babyfit classes for new mums, and they understand the importance of the service provided by the unit at Glangwili Hospital.

Nicola Llewelyn, head of Hywel Dda Health Charities, the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board, said the charity would like to thank Scott and his gym members for their support.

The support of our local communities enables us to provide services over and above what the NHS can provide in the three counties of Hywel Dda and we are extremely grateful for every donation we receive,” said Nicola.
