Welsh Minister to open new Llanelli school

WELSH Education Minister Leighton Andrews will officially open a new £6.3million Llanelli school.

The Minister will perform the honours at the event taking place at Ysgol y Felin on Thursday, November 28.

It will include a ceremony with pupils, dignitaries, senior officers, councillors, the headteacher and Chair of Governors taking part.

The Minister will unveil a slate plaque at the start to mark the official opening of the school.

Pupils are already enjoying their new home where work has recently been completed on an extension and major redevelopment.

The extension was built on the former Ysgol y Babanod building, and houses new infant classrooms plus an Integrated Children’s Centre.

A comprehensive re-landscaping of the existing grounds and play areas was also carried out.

Ysgol y Felin in Felinfoel was established following the successful merger of Ysgol Y Babanod and Felinfoel Juniors.

The school is the latest in the county council’s Modernising Education Programme, set up in 2004 to provide first class accommodation and facilities, and to deliver an effective modern curriculum, to every child in the county. To date, around £110million has been spent on schools.

Education executive board member Cllr Gwynne Wooldridge said: “When children have a better school and a better environment, they behave and do better, and achieve a lot more.

“This is why we have the Modernising Education Programme – to do better for all our children in Carmarthenshire.

“It’s vitally important that we provide the best facilities we can, and the investment at Ysgol y Felin will achieve this for all children in the area.”
