Lift Health and Safety Course

Three local men have gone on a construction skills course to help them find work in the industry.

The Lift programme recently funded the Construction Site Certification Scheme course for three clients enrolled with the programme. CSCS is an essential health and safety certification needed to carry out entry level work on construction sites, for example labouring.

Three Lift clients had identified through the support of their Lift Mentor that they aspired to work in construction so a five day course was booked through a local training provider.

Successfully completing the course has allowed the candidates to apply for suitable construction jobs, and put themselves forward for one of the many construction work experience opportunities available through the Lift programme.

Support is provided by Lift mentors for job searching, CV writing and completing applications, ensuring each candidate has the best chance of finding paid work in the future.

One of the candidates said: “I am really enjoying the course, the tutor is great and the Lift programme has been very supportive.”

Set up in April 2014, the Lift programme supports those Communities First residents who are living in a workless household and who are long term unemployed. The pilot initiative is part of the Welsh Government’s tackling poverty agenda.

The programme provides support on a one-to-one basis, tailored to each individual’s needs, skills and work aspirations.

Lift Mentor Elliott Boyd said: “We have many more up and coming opportunities including access to exclusive work placements and further training courses. We’re looking forward to supporting many more Communities First residents.”

Executive board member for regeneration and leisure Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “I’m delighted that the Lift programme has been able to support these three clients and I wish them well in finding work in the construction industry.”
