We had to look at this a few times in our office, rubbing our eyes each time. As our Llanelli readers are no doubt aware there’s been an awful lot of money spent in town recently, tidying up roundabouts to enhance the various ‘gateways’ to the town.
This is not without its controversies as many people feel that the money could be saved or better spent elsewhere within the town. This will no doubt continue to fuel those controversies and stand out as an example of money that’s not well spent. Or will it?
Google Translate agrees with the council.
What at first appears to be a spelling mistake may simply be a soft mutation? Some residents claim the sign is wrong, other’s that it’s correct.
So who is right?

We’e asked Carmarthenshire County Council to comment and are awaiting their reply, in the meantime you can have your say by filling out the comment form below or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/llanelli.town.3?ref=ts&fref=ts
Latest update: Carmarthenshire County Council have responded with the following statement.
Cllr Mair Stephens, Welsh Language Champion, said:
“The spelling of the sign is correct, as in the Welsh language there is a soft mutation after the preposition ‘i’, which changes the spelling to Lanelli.”
So there we have it. The sign is right, the council is right, some locals are wrong…
