SIX Swansea parks have retained prestigious Green Flag status in celebration of their quality.
Brynmill Park, Singleton Botanic Gardens, Clyne Gardens, Cwmdonkin Park, Victoria Park and Parc Llewelyn have all again been awarded the status.
Green Flags are awarded to parks across the UK in recognition of their excellent facilities and commitment to delivering high-quality green spaces.
The award scheme is delivered in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy, with support from Natural Resources Wales. It’s judged by an army of green space experts who volunteer their time to visit and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.
Swansea Council runs all six of the city’s award-winning parks.
Cllr Mark Child, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Healthy City, said: “Parks are important in all towns and cities. They provide high-quality green spaces that are perfect for sport, recreation and relaxation. Swansea, as a city, is well-known for a terrific work-life balance, and our parks, in combination with our stunning coastline and countryside, are clearly a contributory factor to that reputation. We’re lucky as a council to have one of the best parks teams in the UK. Their work alongside the fantastic friends groups in our parks to help win these awards comes in the wake of the tremendous praise we’ve been getting from across the UK and beyond in response to our world class wild flower displays.”
A record-breaking 100 parks and green spaces have received either a Green Flag award or a Green Flag community award this year.
Lucy Prisk, Green Flag Coordinator at Keep Wales Tidy, said: “We are delighted to be celebrating a record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme. All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the hundreds of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
