Calling all coffee lovers! Our time to shine is just over the horizon because October 1st is International Coffee Day! A day where the “triple, venti, half sweet, non-fat, caramel macchiato” and the “no cream, no sugar, straight black coffee” drinkers can come together and celebrate their love for coffee. So in honor of this upcoming wonderful day, what are some of the health benefits that us coffee drinkers can experience?

Nora Tobin, performance enhancement and executive coach, nutrition specialist and CEO of Nora’s Naturals Coffee, gives three not so well known health benefits that you could be getting from your daily order.

Health benefit #1: Drinking coffee can make you smarter
At least smarter temporarily! The caffeine that is found in coffee acts as a stimulant and blocks the inhibitory neurotransmitter adenosine. Coffee gives most of us more energy, increased focus and overall improving our general brain function.

Health benefit #2: It contains many essential nutrients
The coffee bean is in fact a seed. We know that seeds tend to be pretty good for us, and the coffee seed is no exception. Riboflavin (vitamin B2), Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), Manganese and potassium, Magnesium and niacin (vitamin B3) can all be found in coffee and come together to make sure that our bodies run efficiently as possible.

Health Benefit #3: May Lower the Risk for Cancer
The drinking of coffee has been linked to the protection against two types of Cancer. These two types are liver and colorectal cancer, with them both ranking in the top cancers with the lowest survival rate. These studies found that those who drank coffee had between a 40 and 15 percent lower chance respectively of contracting these cancers.

Bonus – regular coffee consumption has also been linked with reduced risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, and helping those looking to lose and maintain a healthy weight. Add onto this the numerous other health benefits of coffee not listed, and it’s no wonder it’s enjoyed by billions worldwide and considered by some to be a superfood.
