Five women from different communities in Cardiff have stepped into the kitchen to compete against TeamSWP wannabe bakers at an event aimed at promoting community cohesion.
The competition, organised by Detective Chief Inspector Eve Davis (South Wales Police) and Cheryl Pinheiro, Women Connect First was hosted by Cardiff Metropolitan University and women from Tunisia, Sudan, Yemen and Wales volunteered to take part in the event.
The amateur bakers went head-to-head against five members of staff and officers from South Wales Police. All participants selected a bake of their choice and showcased them at the final event yesterday, September 22.
This event was launched on September 16, where participants were introduced to each other at Cardiff Metropolitan University and recipes were submitted. All participants were then treated to a tour of the University.
Detective Chief Inspector Eve Davis said: “As the force lead for domestic abuse and violence, I understand that domestic abuse and violence is a crime that disproportionately affects females.
“I believe that this event creates an opportunity to engage with females who may not have come into contact with police officers or police staff members before and I hope it will go some way to breaking down barriers and building trust and confidence.
“I also hope the event will promote the opportunity that policing as a career could also be an option. We chose to host the event at Cardiff Metropolitan University so that the women could also find out more about courses and education that are available to them.
“Whilst I fully acknowledge that we may not be a team of Mary Berry’s or Paul Hollywood’s, it’s certainly the taking part and community engagement that is the main priority.”
The main bake-off event was judged by Chief Superintendent Wendy Gunney, Women Connect First CEO Maria Contstanza Mesa and entrepreneur Maggie Ogunbanwo.
