Thanks to donations from local communities, Bronglais Hospital is trialling air-filled cushion wedges, which alleviate pressure on patients’ heels when they are lying in bed.
Hywel Dda Health Charities, the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board, has purchased 10 of the wedges for use across the wards at Bronglais Hospital, when needed.
The wedge, which comes with a pump, sits underneath the calf, lifting the heel to stop pressure damage.
Head of Nursing Dawn Jones said: “Bronglais Hospital is trialling this equipment for patients with the aim of alleviating pressure damage and discomfort, and helping to support posture.
“The wedges enhance patient care by offloading pressure on the heel, which reduces the need to use prescribed creams and dressings and can lead to a reduction in pain relief and a reduction in the length of stay.
“We are pleased that Bronglais Hospital is able to trial this approach and we are extremely grateful for the support we receive from our local communities, through fundraising and donations.”
