Scarlets Set Piece Coach Ioan Cunningham says the region will be looking to reap the rewards of their hard work and endeavour during the pre-season onslaught.

Despite being pushed hard in what is now their fourth week of pre-season training Cunningham says the squad are enjoying themselves; “It’s been really good. The boys are working really hard; long days and early starts but I think the boys are really enjoying it. Hopefully we’ll reap some rewards from that.

“There’s a good buzz around the place. The new guys have brought a fresh energy and a fresh approach. They’re keen to learn and are throwing themselves into every session.”

Scarlets are without nine senior players who are on international duty but Cunningham believes it gives other players within the squad an opportunity to stake a claim for the coveted Scarlets jersey.

“You can look at it as a block of games before the Rugby World Cup ends. We’ve set goals amongst ourselves; once you get the jersey to hold on to it and get us into that top four position before everyone returns.”

Cunningham’s development into a senior role further shows the region’s work in developing young coaches as well as the region’s next generation of players.

His coaching career at Parc y Scarlets started in January 2011 as Performance Skills Coach and says the new challenge is one he is enjoying; “It’s great, brilliant, working somewhere I love anyway.

“It’s one of those living the dream scenarios to an extent; coaching a club I love and working with great guys, great coaches and learning on a daily basis.”
