Are you ready for the S4C Rugby Week?

S4C will be showing the Wales v France warm up game on Saturday, 8 August as we all prepare for the Rugby World Cup 2015 in the autumn.

From Monday 10 August to Friday 15 August, there will be a week of archive rugby programmes on the channel during Wythnos Rygbi S4C to kick off the celebrations for the Rugby World Cup in the autumn. S4C’s Rugby World Cup 2015 coverage, entitled Cwpan Rygbi’r Byd 2015, will include nine live games, covering all the Wales games throughout the tournament.

Dafydd Rhys, S4C Director of Content and Transmission says, “A week of classic rugby action from the past is a way of celebrating that the Rugby World Cup is nearly upon us. S4C is excited about the extensive Welsh-language content that is being produced which will reach out, engage and inspire audiences across Wales. It’s a unique service which shows our commitment to a sport that is at the heart of Welsh life.”

This will include some memorable World Cup games from the archive presented by players of the period including Wales v Scotland 2010, Ireland v Wales 2012 and Wales v England 2013.     XXX

Also during the S4C Rugby Week a number of documentaries will be screened about some heroes and characters of the game – Delme Thomas, Gareth Edwards, Ray Gravell, Carwyn James and Huw Llywelyn Davies.

Another documentary Y 15 Olaf (The Last 15) will tell the story of the last 15 to turn out for Wales before the outbreak of the First World War.

There’ll be highlights of Wales’ Under 18 games against Italy and South Africa during the week as well as games from a new tournament – the Cardiff 7s – live on Saturday 15 August.

Producers BBC Cymru Wales have brought together a strong presentation team which includes commentator Cennydd Davies and Gareth Rhys Owen while Gwyn Jones joins presenter Gareth Roberts in the studio. Gwyn will also join Shane Williams on the touchline.

In the other weeks leading up to Rugby World Cup 2015, S4C will be broadcasting more rugby programmes in preparation for the tournament.

These include a series of three programmes about the history of the World Cup, Hanes Cwpan y Byd, programmes showing the best of French club rugby – the Top 14 – and documentaries including Y Gêm Gudd about Llanelli RFC’s controversial game in Russia in the 1950s.
