Alcohol threatens Ffion and Gethin’s relationship in Cwmderi

Ffion and Gethin’s relationship is under threat once again this week in Pobol y Cwm, as the soap opera returns to the screen after a week off.

Their relationship was a result of a secret affair that started behind the back of Ffion’s former partner, Jinx – but Ffion has a long history as an alcoholic and her alcoholism is now threatening their relationship.

Actor Simon Watts who’s originally from Ammanford, plays Gethin, Ffion’s boyfriend who works as a mechanic. He’s lived in the village for the past five years, and his relationship with Ffion is relatively new. But does Gethin regret entering into a relationship with someone with a lot of problems?

“He knows about her past dalliances with alcohol, and realises the danger of being with an alcoholic, especially one who’s lapsed and started drinking again,” says Simon.

Although Gethin and Ffion’s relationship is facing a crossroads, Simon’s relationship with his wife, actress Rhian Blythe is full of joy and happiness. In early July they became first-time parents to a son called Lewsyn.

Simon thinks there’s hope for his character’s relationship with Ffion.

“Gethin tries to be there for her day and night. He knows that the journey won’t be an easy one, but he loves her, and is willing to do anything to stop Ffion from destroying herself.”

“Through the darkness, there is an element of hope, because Gethin understands how it feels to battle through the grips of depression, after he was abused as a child by his dad, Moc.”

“Not only does Gethin worry about how it will affect their love life, but also Ffion’s relationship with her daughter, Arwen.”

“From Gethin’s perspective, he regrets the way their relationship first started, but he also thinks that it’s better for a person to leave an unhappy relationship, because staying in a relationship can lead to more harm than good. And Ffion and Jinx’s relationship was like that.”
