The Welsh Liberal Democrats have welcomed the news that the Welsh Government has published a bill to establish a new Commission for Tertiary Education and Research by 2023 stating that the reforms would represent a significant milestone in the development of the Welsh education system.
Commenting on the announcement of the planned reforms, which were devised by former Welsh Liberal Democrat Education Minister Kirsty Williams, Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds MS said:
“I am proud to see this bill published and can confirm that the Welsh Liberal Democrats will continue to support it. The proposed Commission for Tertiary Education and Research, which was the result of the tremendous hard work of Kirsty Williams as Education Secretary, will ensure Wales has a thriving and modern post-16 education system in the years to come.
“The inclusion of all elements of post-16 education – including colleges, universities, adult education, apprenticeships and sixth forms under the one body is a vital step in modernizing our education system and building a system which works coherently and provides the skills and opportunities needed for the 21st Century.
“The proposed Commission will put the interests of our learners at its heart and empower young people to gain the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in a rapidly changing world and economy.
“Not only will it provide for our young, but will also ensure a focus is kept on life-long education, a key liberal principle and something that is absolutely vital as technology continues to change both our national employment market and the skills needed to succeed in it.”
