Searches for ‘John Lewis jumper’ skyrocket 900% after Christmas advert released

Analysis of Google search data reveals that online searches for ‘John Lewis jumper’ in the UK skyrocketed 900% on the 4th November, the day that John Lewis released their Christmas advert featuring a little boy who gives a Christmas jumper to an alien girl.

A new finding by creative resource Design Bundlesreveals that online interest in ‘John Lewis jumper’ skyrocketed to ten times the average volume in one day, an unprecedented spike in interest for John Lewis jumpers, according to Google Trends analysis.

The jumper, which sold out on the John Lewis website within an hour of the advert dropping, is navy blue with green sleeves, and features a Christmas tree embellished with lights.

The research also revealed that online searches for ‘Christmas tree jumper’ exploded 334% on the 4th November, and searches for ‘Christmas jumper’ saw a hike of 127%.

A spokesperson for Design Bundles, which conducted the study, said:

“The John Lewis Christmas advert – and the Christmas adverts of other popular retailers – are beloved, hotly anticipated, and never fail to signal the start of Christmas in the UK. It’s fascinating to see just how much the John Lewis Christmas advert impacts us every year, from our emotions right down to our style and fashion interests, which we see from the huge spike in searches for John Lewis jumpers, and Christmas and Christmas tree related jumpers”
