M&S is the most popular supermarket for Christmas food 2021, according to Google

• M&S is Brits’ favourite supermarket choice for their Christmas food shop with 34,000 average monthly searches. 
• Waitrose comes in second as a popular choice for Christmas food, followed by Sainsburys 
• The Co-op is the least searched supermarket for Christmas food  

A new study has revealed that ‘Marks and Spencer’ is the UK’s most Google supermarket for Christmas food. 

Research by casino review experts CasinoSites.org analysed Google search data and to discover the most searched for supermarket in the UK for the Christmas food shop. 

M&S places first as the most searched for supermarket when it comes to Christmas food with an average of 34,000 searches a month. The search term “Marks and Spencer Christmas food” receives double the queries of the second-placed supermarket. It has 86 dedicated Christmas items ready to order, including award-winning products such as the ‘Golden Blond Chocolate Star Christmas pudding’, and the ‘Perfect Turkey Joint’. These won awards in the Christmas taste awards 2021.As of November 2021, M&S have sold out of 51% of the items.  

Waitrose places third with 13,000 average monthly searches, and also has the earliest deadline for delivery orders, 15th December. 

The second most popular supermarket in the UK for Christmas food is Sainsbury’s with 14,000 monthly Google searches.  

Aldi was revealed as the fourth most popular, with the supermarket gaining 7,100 monthly Google searches for their Christmas range. The interest in Aldi has grown steadily since 2016.  

The research also analysed Google Trends to discover when the nation starts planning its Christmas feast, with the interest in ‘Christmas food shop’ typically starting to rise in September.  

Over the past five years, M&S has been the most popular Christmas food search on four occasions, however in 2018 “Waitrose Christmas food” won the festive food fight, receiving more search interest than M&S. In this year, Waitrose released six Christmas adverts around the festive season, rather than just one – with the central message being the role of food at Christmas. 

Heston Blumenthal, British celebrity chef and TV personality, inspired the 2018 Waitrose Christmas food range. 

In comparison to 2021, M&S has taken a landslide win with 226% more searches than the second most popular supermarket – Sainsburys. 

In 2020, ‘Tesco Christmas food’ was ranking higher than Morrisons, Asda and Iceland. In 2021, Morrisons has now become more popular. The average monthly search volume for Morrisons is 1,500 times more than Tesco. 

M&S’s most popular Colin the Caterpillar cake has been recreated as an Elf, for the Christmas shop. 

There were 40% more searches for Waitrose Christmas food compared to Morrisons Christmas food. In comparison to 2021, there is now an 109% increase in searches for Morrisons over Waitrose.  

The demand for supermarket Christmas delivery slots is set to be much higher this year (Which?, 2021).
