The Farmers’ Union of Wales is looking forward to a full programme of activities at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair (Monday 29 – Tuesday 30 November 2021), after a 2 year absence due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Starting the 2-day event the FUW is launching a call for action paper on carbon trading and a further call for action on payment capping. The reports set out how the respective issues should be resolved and paper copies of these documents will be available at the FUW stand, as well as on our website.

FUW Head of Policy Dr Nick Fenwick said: “Carbon trading and capping on payments are two critical issues for the industry and urgent action is required. Carbon trading issues need to be addressed to ensure Wales’ family farms can remain part of the solution, instead of a casualty of carbon offsetting.

“The FUW also maintains the view that payment capping and redistributive payments should be maintained and enhanced under future policies, coupled with a strict ‘active farmer’ rule. This is to ensure money goes to the family farms that make the greatest contribution to rural economies and communities. Further details on this will be outlined in the report.”

The Monday of the show will also see the return of the FUW’s Christmas card design competition winners’ prize giving. FUW President Glyn Roberts said: “This year, as usual, the competition was fierce and the winning designs were selected from among the hundreds of entries, which have come in from across Wales. I thank all of the schools for their fantastic contributions and look forward to presenting the winning children with their prizes.”

The Christmas cards are available to be purchased at the FUW stand with proceeds going towards the FUW President’s charity – The DPJ Foundation. A Christmas hamper is also up for grabs, with proceeds from the raffle tickets being donated to the DPJ Foundation.

Those visiting the FUW stand can also help the FUW and partner organisations establish a snapshot picture of the broadband situation in Wales by filling out the survey that seeks to explore how people feel about the level of communication between themselves and their provider, cost-value of service and further look at how proposed changes to online livestock recording systems could affect the farming community.

FUW Insurance Services Ltd. (FUWIS) are proud to sponsor an ATV helmet as a prize for the Wales Farm Safety Partnership (WFSP) competition which is being run at the respective stand and members can also pick up a farm safety sign at the Union stand.

“Farm safety very much remains at the top of our agenda and we are proud to support the work of the WFSP by raising awareness and sharing information on best practices. We will have FUWIS staff with us on both days and those who have questions about what cover they might need and what products are available to insure themselves and their business should the worst come true are welcome to join us at our stand for an informal chat,” added Glyn Roberts.

Also joining the FUW at the stand are representatives from RDP Law, who are happy to answer any questions members may have.

“We very much look forward to welcoming members, friends and family to our stand and hope many of you will be able to join us at some point over the 2 days for a catch-up, paned and mince pie,” added the Union President.
