Preply’s predicted that the Welsh language is expected to reach 1,168,115 native speakers by 2050, an increase of 32%.

The research found that there was a decrease of 41,100 between 2018 and 2019, however, from 2020, the number of native speakers increased again by 26,000. Although the number of native speakers is not yet as high as in 2018, it is good news for the Welsh language to see this increase.

To try to push the language even further, the Welsh government, in fact, has launched a strategy for the promotion of this language called Cymraeg 2050.

The vision: A million Welsh speakers by 2050. The Welsh language is thriving, the number of speakers has reached a million, and it is used in every aspect of life. Among those who do not speak Welsh, there is goodwill and a sense of ownership towards the language and a recognition by all of its contribution to the culture, society and economy of Wales.

That vision is set to become a reality according to Preply as their research predicts there will be 1,168,115 native speakers by 2050.
