The Senedd hosted Greyhound Rescue Wales today in a joint event sponsored by the Welsh Liberal Democrat MS Jane Dodds and Plaid Cymru MS Luke Fletcher.

Greyhound Rescue Wales began in 1993 with a small group of people trying to rescue Greyhounds and Lurchers in the Swansea area. Over the next few years, the organisation grew quickly and attracted support from many parts of Wales.
Greyhound Rescue Wales became a registered charity in 1996 when it covered the whole of Wales and is the longest established Greyhound charity in Wales and the only all Wales charity dedicated to rescuing and re-homing Greyhounds and Lurchers.

Today’s visit comes as a number of Senedd Members are working to outlaw greyhound racing in Wales. Wales currently has only one greyhound racing track left. The Valley Greyhound Stadium located in Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly is currently looking to expand.

Commenting Jane Dodds MS stated:

“It was fantastic to see such a wide range of cross-party support today at the event in front of the Senedd and I would like to thank the Senedd Members and staff who turned up to discuss the issue alongside Greyhound Rescue Wales and the dogs for coming to teach us all.

“Unfortunately greyhounds and lurchers who are put into racing often face serious injury and become traumatised from their time on the track. To add to this, many are simply disregarded and abandoned when they reach 3 years old and are deemed too old to race.

“I rescued my own greyhound Arthur when he was six years old after he fell during a race and hurt his neck and he is still scarred by his time on the track.

“I will continue to work with Luke (Fletcher MS) on this issue and build cross-party consensus on outlawing this outdated and cruel sport
