With two victories and a narrow defeat the Scarlets secured their place in the final of the Premiership Rugby Singha 7s competition that will take place at Twickenham Stoop on Friday 28th August.
Scrum half Connor Lloyd skippered the Scarlets 7s outfit at the Welsh leg of the Singha 7s and was pleased with the result following a disappointing run out last season and a serious knee injury soon after that kept him sidelined for most of the 2014-15 season.
The Scarlets opened their campaign with a last gasp victory over favourites Dragons before going on to breeze past the Blues. The final game was the only blemish on their record, buckling under pressure at the very last moment to allow the Ospreys to snatch a win and break the stalemate.
Lloyd was nonetheless very pleased with the overall outcome: “We won two from three which I think the boys will be really happy with. First game we managed to sneak a win, second game we did really well and I think the boys could be disappointed that we only got two from three in the end, but we’re still really happy that we’re going through to the next round.”
On making the journey to Twickenham Stoop in two weeks’ time, Lloyd is relishing the opportunity to pit himself and his team against the best the English Premiership has to offer.
“On a personal level, I’ve never played [at Twickenham Stoop] before so obviously it’s a new experience for me. I haven’t really played too much sevens myself and we’re playing against the best; obviously the English will have really strong teams out so hopefully if we’re able to do a job on them then it would be the highlight of the season.”
Dai Flanagan, Scarlets 7s Coach added; “The Welsh teams will be going in as underdogs this time around, looking at the sides these English teams can produce but it’s a challenge we’re looking forward to.”
The Scarlets will now join the Dragons at Twickenham Stoop for the Premiership Rugby Singha 7s Finals where the top two teams from all the competitions will come together to compete for the trophy.
