This Christmas think about the farmers that help put food on your table

Farmers Weekly has launched a year-long farm safety campaign, titled Dying to Feed You, to raise awareness of the number of incidents and tragic accidents that happen to many farmers and their workers.

Why this campaign is critical

The fatal accident rate on British farms is higher than in any other sector. While only 1% of the British workforce is employed in agriculture, the sector is responsible for 20% of all fatal accidents at work.

Growers and livestock producers are dealing with deaths on a daily basis – with half of all farmers we’ve surveyed this year saying they know someone killed in a workplace accident.

The Dying to Feed You campaign has the potential to save lives.

The plan is to highlight the stories of farmers /farm workers who have personally been affected by a serious on farm accident that has changed their lives as a result, through a series of impactful portraits and interviews.

Our initiative positively promotes safety first on farms and will tell 12 personal stories throughout the year, starting with the extended inspirational story of William Sayers that came out in the 26th of November issue of Farmers Weekly.

William Sayers was 12 years old when he lost his arm in an accident on the family farm in Northern Ireland.

In our 17th of December Christmas issue we will be featuring our second story of Cumbria farmer Ashley Herbert, who was 24 when he lost his right hand in a forage harvester accident.
