Survey reveals that people in the city stay away from wasting food, but still have a little more work to do
Haier, the No.1 Global Major appliance brand, has commissioned a survey to discover if the nation wastes food, the reasons behind food wastage and the top 5 cities in the UK who are prone to this.
The survey revealed that 61% of people in Cardiff don’t waste food on a weekly basis, compared to 39% of people in who do waste food each week.
Out of the people who admitted they waste food, 70% confirmed that 1-3 items of food were thrown away by the end of the week, compared to the city of Sheffield where 80% of people admitted that 1-3 items of food were disposed of.
Of those surveyed 74% said that it equated to an average of £10.00 or less worth of food waste in the average household each week – totalling up to £480 a year.
THE TOP FIVE CITIES WHERE FOOD GOES TO WASTE:
- Liverpool
- London
- Sheffield
- Leeds
- Manchester
When looking at the types of food that expire in Welsh households, the good old fruit and veg seemed to be the first that would expire, with 65% of people admitting that they threw a lot of it away each week, this was followed by Dairy at 15% and lastly meat and poultry at 12%.
It also seems that people in the city of Cardiff don’t intend to food waste and there were two main reasons that came out on top, 35% admitted that they never end up eating what they purchased as well as consumers confirming that the expiry dates came around too soon, the city of Bristol also agreed with this with 70% of people saying that the reason why their food went to waste was also due to the food having too much of an early expiry date.
With all this in mind, there are many ways you can prevent food going to waste and keep food fresher for longer. Modern technology has proven to work in harmony with smart kitchen appliances, allowing busy households to prevent food from being thrown away. For example, there are now appliances that absorb humidity, allowing fruit and veg to stay fresh and ripe in an optimum environment. There are also devices that offer you inspiration on how to utilise your leftovers, with apps that remind you what is inside your fridge, providing you with recipes, so you can update your shopping list on the go. Technology like these fit seamlessly into everyday life and makes a positive impact on the environment by reducing food waste and allowing households to feel better about how their food is stored and maintained.
The survey also revealed what households in Cardiff would hate their fridge to tell them what they had run out of.
