A teenage Action for Children volunteer from Caerphilly was invited to a Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey hosted by The Duchess of Cambridge earlier this month to pay tribute to the incredible work of individuals and organisations across the UK through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sixteen-year-old Ella Webber joined other inspirational individuals at the service including charity workers, emergency responders, teachers and armed forces personnel who all stepped up to support their communities throughout the pandemic. The service was also attended by those who work in some of the key areas Her Royal Highness and The Royal Foundation continue to focus on, including mental health, family support and the early years, in addition to those who may be more vulnerable or isolated within our society.
Ella is a volunteer with Action for Children’s Tafarn Newydd service in Pontypool which provides early years support to families with disabled children. Ella also supports her mum who provides weekend respite for disabled children as she knows the difference a regular break can make to parents. Passionate about supporting disabled children in her community, Ella ensures they have fun and don’t miss out on any opportunities.
Ella said: ‘It meant everything to me to be invited to the service. Everyone there had sacrificed so much in their life to help others who are less fortunate – and to be recognised in this way and spend time with these incredible people was wonderful. You don’t volunteer for the rewards, helping these children is just something I am deeply passionate about, but the service is something I will never forget.’
Ella’s mum and coordinator at Action for Children’s Tafarn Newydd, Nicole, accompanied her to the carol service. She said: ‘It was such a magical day and wonderful to be with Ella at an occasion that recognised so many inspirational people.
‘You need commitment, passion and most of all, love, to work with children with the challenges they face, and Ella has all three qualities in spades. It was an exceptionally proud day for us, and we want to thank The Duchess for inviting us.’
The carol service will broadcast on ITV at 7.30pm on Christmas Eve.
