Fabian Way cycle and foot path works on track

The construction of a new cycle and foot path along Fabian Way is on track for completion in September.

The path will be easy to use, surfaced and lit with minimal gradients and will be ready for the opening of Swansea University’s new Bay Campus.

This new section will link the Bay Campus to Baldwin’s bridge on the Neath Port Talbot/Swansea boundary, complementing the work done to improve the route from Baldwin’s bridge to Port Tennant and into Swansea.

The work complements existing partnership work between Neath Port Talbot and Swansea Councils in devising a ‘tube-style’ map of all local cycle routes to encourage commuters in the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas to ditch the car in favour of a bike on their journey to work.

The new route will provide a safe continuous link between Swansea University’s Bay Campus and the Singleton Campus.

It will not only benefit students and staff at the new campus but also other cyclists and walkers, as the route also links up with Route 4 of the National Cycle Network, a long distance cycle route between London and Fishguard, via Margam Country Park and Aberavon Seafront.

Neath Port Talbot Council is working with partners to develop a comprehensive commuter cycle network that enables residents and visitors to access towns, employment centres and visitor attractions effectively and safely.

Councillor Ali Thomas OBE, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council said: “The developments along the Fabian Way corridor mean that more and more people are working in this area, and with the opening of the new Bay Campus we are working to ensure that it is well served by a number of alternative transport options”.

“Cycling and walking are healthy, environmentally friendly and cheap alternatives to the car and for these reasons ‘active travel’ is growing in popularity. This is one of a number of schemes in the county borough which aim to cater for this increased demand”.
