The UK’s Favourite Engagement Ring Stones Revealed

• New research reveals that Diamonds are still the UK’s most popular stone for engagement rings, taking the top spot with 13,000 searches per month.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, new research reveals that Diamonds are still the UK’s most popular stone for engagement rings. Sapphires are the most popular alternative for those looking for something different.

Creative resource Design Bundles analysed Google search data for engagement ring stones to reveal the most popular ones. A list of gemstones was combined with the term “engagement ring” to reveal which ones are the most popular.

Diamond engagement rings take the top spot on the list, receiving 13,000 searches per month. Diamonds are the hardest naturally occurring gemstone, rated a 10 on the Mohs scale. Whilst the most commonly used diamonds are colourless, there are plenty of rarer alternatives like the blush coloured diamond featured in actress Blake Lively’s engagement ring.

Sapphires ranked second and were revealed to be the most searched alternative to diamonds. On average “sapphire engagement ring” is searched 9,400 times per month in the UK. The stone can come in a variety of colours including pink, blue, green, and yellow. The blue variety of the stone has seen an increase in popularity after being worn by famous faces like Princess Diana and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

Opal engagement rings rank third with an average of 6,400 searches per month. The unique gemstone has iridescent flecks throughout and comes in a wide range of colours including the rarer black variety as worn by actress Jane Fonda. There is also an array of meanings associated with the stone from being a symbol of luck to being the primary birthstone for the month of October. 

In fourth is Aquamarine, which receives approximately 4,100 searches per month. The name refers to the colour of the stone which can range from light blue to light green. Aquamarine is the birthstone for March and also represents tranquility and serenity. Singer Justin Timberlake chose to add two Aquamarine stones to the ring he designed for actress Jessica Biel, likely a nod to her birth month.

Following in fifth is Morganite with a monthly search volume of 2,100. Coming from the same family as Aquamarine, Morganite is the name of the pink or orange variety of Beryl. The first Morganite stone was discovered in 1910 and was named by Tiffany and Co. gemologist George Kunz. The stone can be used as a similar alternative to unusual designs like actress Lily Collins’ rose cut diamond engagement ring.
