Scarlets get the 2015-16 Guinness PRO12 campaign underway with a 10-16 victory away from home against the reigning champions Glsgow Warriors.
Speaking after the emphatic victory in what had been an intense 80 minutes of rugby, Scarlets Head Coach Wayne Pivac said: “It was a very nervous time at the end there. When you lose one player in the modern game it’s pretty difficult to defend. Then when you go down to 13 men it is really difficult. It obviously gets increasingly difficult when down to 11!
“They just kept coming, it was unbelievable.”
The Scarlets closed out the game with only 11 men on the field with yellow cards for Rob Evans, James Davies and John Barclay and Rhodri Williams off the field with a head injury.
Pivac said he was proud of the performance by team, he went on to say: “I’m certainly very proud of the effort. We were down in numbers; we played particularly good in the first half into the wind and got in the lead.
“We always knew that Glasgow would come back and our defence would play a part. That’s certainly the way it turned out.”
Scarlets secured a sixth place finish in last season’s Guinness PRO12 and will be keen to improve on their final standings; “Every team wants to be in the play-offs and we’re no different. We’re not looking beyond the World Cup period at this stage. The squad has got a job to do and we’d like to be in the top four by the time the internationals return to us.”
Scarlets take on Ulster Rugby at Parc y Scarlets on Saturday 12th September, kick-off 3pm.
