Sleeping Soundly

• Wales has been revealed as the UK region where people are most likely to get a good night’s sleep

• London and the North West are the regions where sleep may be of the lowest quality

• A range of factors were studied to come to this conclusion, including light pollution and noise complaints

A new study has revealed which regions in the UK are the best and worst for good sleep, with Wales coming out on top.
Research by sleep experts Eachnight studied official government data on light pollution, noise complaints and anxiety levels across the eleven regions of Great Britain to determine where someone can expect the best and worst night’s sleep. Each region was given a score out of ten for each factor, adding up to an overall score out of 30.

It was concluded that Wales is the best place in the UK to get good sleep, with an overall score of 25.77 out of a possible 30. Wales had the second lowest level of noise complaints and the second lowest average brightness, giving it a high score overall.

The South West is the second-best place for high quality sleep, with an overall score of 21.96 out of 30. The South West ranks in the top four of all three factors, making it a good place to get high quality sleep.

Following closely behind with a score of 21.83 is Scotland. Scotland is the darkest region and the third least anxious, however it is also the second highest region for noise complaints, compromising its overall score.

Next is the North East with a score of 21.43. The North East has the lowest level of noise complaints, however it also has the second highest level of anxiety, meaning it is ranked fourth overall.

Fifth on the list is the East Midlands, with a score of 19.72. The East Midlands falls in the middle of the rankings for brightness levels and noise complaints; however, it also reports the second lowest levels of anxiety.

The regions of the UK ranked based on sleep quality
Region Overall score
Wales 25.77
South West  21.96
Scotland 21.83
North East 21.43
East Midlands 19.72
East of England 18.43
West Midlands 17.19
Yorkshire and the Humber 16.29
South East 15.63
North West 15.15
London 9.78

The East of England is up next with a score of 18.43. The region falls in the middle of all three factors, putting it in the middle of the overall ranking.

Next is the West Midlands, with a score of 17.19. The West Midlands has the lowest anxiety levels of all the regions, but is also one of the brightest, putting it at seventh overall.

Yorkshire and the Humber is eighth on the list, scoring 16.29. The region reports the third highest levels of anxiety and falls in the middle of the other two categories, putting it towards the bottom of the list overall.

The South East is next, racking up an overall score of 15.63. It has the third highest level of noise complaints and ranks in the middle for the other two factors.

The North West just misses out on the bottom placement, scoring 15.15. It’s the second brightest region and ranks highly in the other factors, putting it almost bottom of the list.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, London is the worst region for a good night’s sleep in the UK. The region reports the highest number of noise complaints and anxiety levels, and is also the brightest region, giving it a score of just 9.78 overall.

Jasmin Lee for Eachnight commented on the research: “It is interesting to see which regions are the best and worst for getting high quality sleep. It makes sense to see London at the bottom of the list what with its bright lights and constant noise. Similarly, it is also understandable that more rural regions such as Wales, Scotland and the South West are top of the list. These findings allow us to understand why some factors may affect quality of sleep and how this varies across different areas.”
