COUNTY’S FIRST COMMUNITY FRIDGE OPENS

CETMA has today (Wednesday 23^rd February) opened Carmarthenshire’s first Community Fridge. A community fridge is a space where anyone can exchange or pick up food that would otherwise go to waste. It

Kidwelly Community Fridge is based in CETMA Kidwelly and the organisation has partnered with Hubbub and joined their Community Fridge Network. It is the first one to open in Carmarthenshire and the organisation have plans for working with other communities to open more.

Gayna Bras, Project Officer said:

“We’re so pleased to be opening today and we can’t thank everyone enough for joining us for the launch. The fridge will be open Tuesday to Friday during the day for people to pop in and pick up or drop off their unwanted food.”

“A Community Fridge can be accessed by anyone and everyone who wants to share food, volunteer or get involved with our other activities. There are some rules on what you can and cannot put in the fridge (for health and safety reasons) so please make sure to check in advance before you visit.”

The fridge isn’t a means to tackle food poverty, its aim is to tackle the environmental and social impact of thousands of tonnes of edible food going to waste every year.

The UK’s first community fridge was trialled in 2016. Since then, 100s of community fridges have taken root across the UK helping thousands connect
