I’m 17 now and face a bit of a holiday dilemma.

I live with my mother and she wants me to go on holiday with her and her new partner. I really don’t fancy watching the two of them slobber over each other for 2 weeks.

Also, my father wants me to go on holiday with him, his new wife and my half brother and sister. As much as I enjoy spending time with them, I don’t want to go away and spend all the time babysitting.

I know I should be grateful that my parents want and can afford to take me away but I don’t want to go with either of them.

I want to get a job and hang out with my friends.

How do I tell my parents that I don’t want to go?

Thanks

Dear Confused Holiday Maker,

It sounds like your parents have no idea that you feel this way. Also, they probably still view you as their little girl or maybe don’t want to see you as a 17 year old young lady.

You are a young adult now and you can make your own decisions now. Ask them if you could talk to them, and explain about what you want to do, and say that it’s not that you’re ungrateful but you just want to start making your own choices from now on.

Explain that you are trying to grow into a responsible adult and part of that process is making my own choices. Thank them for always being there for you and ask them for their support in this transitional period. Best of luck and I hope you find a job soon! Gemma.
