Spring has definitely sprung but with the sun shining and dry weather, Fire and Rescue Services in Wales have a growing concern on the safety of its road users and in particular motorcyclists.  Over 22% of road deaths that occur in Wales involve motorcyclists and we need to reduce these figures to prevent fatal incidents and serious injuries to motorcycle riders and their passengers.

Jane Honey, Deputy Head of Community Safety, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said

“Wales plays hosts to some fantastic scenery, winding roads and a number of motorcycle friendly businesses. However, there is concern around the number who sadly do not make it home safe from either a day out riding solo or with a group of friends.

Operation Darwin is an initiative with the Welsh Fire and Rescue Services that takes place at identified biker assembly venues on popular biker routes in Wales. Along with numerous partners we undertake engagement, education and discussion on the attitudes of the “at risk” bikers. It is designed to break down barriers and steer bikers towards the Bike safe programme.

Richard Davies, Road Safety Manager for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said:

“Operation Darwin is a fantastic opportunity for us to engage with motorcyclists whilst they are out on their rides.  Providing this visibility also discourages speeding and dangerous driving, which of course can result in serious accidents on our Welsh Roads.

As bikers tend to ride in groups or pairs, it is usually the case that when one is involved in an accident the first person on the scene will be a fellow biker. Biker Down! aims to reduce the number of motorcyclists killed and seriously injured in road accidents and is delivered by Operational Firefighters providing valuable training and information on how to manage an accident scene, apply first aid and gives details on the science of being seen.  These courses are FREE and for more information about Biker Down and to book a course local to you email info@bikerdowncymru.org.uk

Station Manager Glenn Lewis from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service‘s Road Safety and Education  Department said:

“Its also imperative that motorcyclists are wearing the right kit whilst on the bike.  Full protective clothing is a must, even for those short trips and make sure you are visible with some fluorescent clothing.  Make sure you have a correct fitting helmet as this could inevitably save your life in the event of an accident.
