Swansea Council has registered an interest with the Office for Low Emission Vehicles for the next round of funding to help cover the costs of additional charging points in towns and cities across the UK.

The council already has 11 electric cars in its fleet of vehicles. Charging points are located in the council’s depots but a successful funding application could see more put in place in Swansea in future.

Cllr Andrea Lewis, Cabinet Member for Next Generation Services, said: “As a council, we’re wholly supportive of new technologies like this. Electric cars with zero carbon emissions aren’t just extremely environmentally friendly, they’ll also save motorists lots of money on petrol costs in the long term because there’s no need to fill up the tank on a regular basis.

“Cars like these offer a glimpse into the future as we make strides towards forms of travel that are 100% green and sustainable. We need to take the lead on this issue as an authority, which is why we already have a number of electric cars in our fleet, but we’re also looking to increase the number of charging points available across the city. As electric cars become ever more popular, it’s important we’re in a position here in Swansea to make the most of technological advances. This will help strengthen our status as a leading sustainable city that’s at the forefront of the global fight against climate change.”

Teams like recycling, highways and the corporate building and property service are among those already using electric cars at Swansea Council. The council is also looking to introduce six electric vans in coming months.
