Jordan addresses graduation ceremony

A care-experienced young person, supported by Action for Children’s Skills Plus in North Wales has graduated from the WeMindTheGap scheme. Jordan (21) from Flintshire completed the ‘WeGrow’ component of the scheme that involves six-months’ employment – comprising five different work placements, life coaching, new skills and experiences followed by six further months of support.

Mark Rimmer, Flintshire Men Skipper for WeMindTheGap said: ‘We are so proud of the way Jordan has developed and grown with confidence over the last six months. He has developed from being a quiet, shy, introverted young man to someone who now has the confidence to take part in Dementia classes within Theatr Clwyd, leading the sessions. The qualities that we have seen Jordan develop such as humour, providing support and increased self-esteem have been wonderful to witness.

‘All of the work placements Jordan undertook were in different work sectors, these include Redrow construction, Newydd Catering (Flintshire County Council) and Theatr Clwyd. Jordan has been extremely successful, and the Employer Partners have spoken highly of him. The dedication he has shown to the programme and to improve himself has been unbelievable. He has been a source of stability to the group which was seen when he worked with his peers during outward-bound expeditions.
Jordan should be very proud of what he has achieved and can look forward to a bright future.’

Katy and Jordan

Jordan is looking to the future after graduating, his aim is to work with groups in the charity sector or with Theatr Clwyd. He said: ‘WeMindTheGap was life changing and an incredible experience. I faced many fears and learned so many new skills. Now I’m really keen to get a full time job and I know I can do it. I’m so grateful for all the support I’ve received from Action for Children and WeMindTheGap.’

Katy Alger, young persons practitioner with Action for Children’s Skill Plus service, added: ‘Jordan has come a long way in 6 months. He recently told me that he is no longer scared to face his fears and we are extremely proud of him. His time at WeMindTheGap has been transformative, and we are very excited about the next chapter in this great young man’s life.’
