  • Look Fabulous Forever, the UK’s first pro-age beauty brand, has conducted research to debunk six beauty myths that are deeply ingrained within the beauty industry
  • From older women not needing special formulations to the older generation not being capable of buying make up online, these are some of the most common beauty myths spread amongst the older generation

When it comes to beauty products for mature women, it’s often said that ‘less is more’ but how true is that?

From older women not buying makeup online to rules against wearing bright lipstick, many myths are regularly spread around the beauty industry. They offer a false message to the women looking to enjoy the world of glamour at every age.

In response to these findings, direct to consumer cosmetics and skincare brand Look Fabulous Forever has conducted research to unmask the six beauty myths that are deeply ingrained in the DNA of all large beauty brands.

Older women don’t wear makeup

It’s believed that instead of wanting to wear make-up, older women just want skincare products with an anti-ageing message. Look Fabulous Forever’s customer research has revealed this to be untrue. This message comes strongly from marketing across the big beauty brands where messages such as ‘Get the London Look’ quickly change to ‘Prevent the 7 Visible Signs of Ageing’ once you hit your 50s. There are endless amounts of makeup products made to suit and compliment mature skin, so you don’t have to miss out, no matter what age you are.

Less is more with make-up the older you get

One common beauty myth is that makeup can accentuate facial lines and sit in wrinkles and therefore you should use less if you have older skin. While this does sometimes depend on application, it’s all about choosing the right formulation. Ensure that the formulation of your products understands and works with the needs of older skin. When the products are right for you and applied correctly, makeup can instantly restore your colour and definition, young or old.

Older women won’t buy makeup online

Another belief that is shared amongst the beauty industry and beyond is that older women can’t manage technology or understand the internet. And whilst this may be true for some of the older generation, it is not true for all. There are many brands out there that will do everything they can to support and guide older women online such as, making their websites accessible for all and offering a real-live human customer advice service for those seeking help.

Older women don’t need special formulations

What will suit a young skin cannot look the same on an older skin. Skin is the largest organ in the body and the most exposed to the elements. Sun damage and pollutants will impact the condition of your skin as well as lifestyle habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol. In addition to this, menopause comes with the loss of oestrogen, elastin, and collagen. It’s unreasonable to think that makeup made for 20-year-olds will suit someone who’s older. It’s important to pick the right product for you and your skin.

Older women can be ‘still beautiful’ but never just beautiful

Fashions in what kind of face is considered attractive change over time so our perceptions of beauty evolve too. However, the ideal of beauty stays invariably young. It’s common that women who are of an older age will be complimented as ‘still beautiful’ despite their age, in comparison to younger women who are more likely to be titled simply ‘beautiful’ without any caveats.

Older women should never wear bright lipstick

Older women can feel the pressure that the things that may have suited them once, will no longer suit them because they are older. Therefore, many women will not experiment with bright, vibrant lipstick colours. When it comes to beauty there is no sell-by-date so if you want to wear a bright lipstick, then so you should.
