Strawberries and fried chicken? Gousto’s four ways to use up your summer strawberries

Some flavour combinations are iconic. Like strawberries and cream, it’s a UK summer standout. Jordan Moore, Senior Food Innovation Manager at meal delivery plan service, Gousto has whipped up four innovative ways to ensure none of your delicious summer strawberries go to waste.

Strawberries & Fried Chicken

To kick off our list, we have a brilliantly brave flavour pairing, but one that’s delicious if you’re bold enough to try it: strawberries and fried chicken. By bringing these two together, you’ll combine the juicy sweetness of the fruit with the crunchy saltiness of the chicken. It’s quite a departure from the beans and gravy that you might usually sit on the side of your fried chicken. But once you’ve tried it, you’ll never want to go back.

Add some balsamic to your strawberries

When you consider adding something to a bowl of strawberries, you’ll most likely think about sugar or cream. Maybe even chocolate. You probably won’t make a beeline for the balsamic vinegar. The reality, however, is that the sharpness of the balsamic and the sweetness of the strawberries make a winning combination. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a tasty dessert or serve them as they are for a surprising starter.

Turn them into cocktail ice-lollies

There’s no better way to stop and appreciate the sunny weather than with a fruity, refreshing treat. And let’s face it, if there’s one thing better than a G&T, it’s a frozen, fruity G&T, on a stick. Check out Gousto’s favourite fruity cocktail ice-lolly recipe, perfect for using up any strawberries that are on their way out.

Ingredients (makes around 4, depending on size of moulds)

  • 25g sugar
  • 16g strawberries
  • 2 limes
  • 4 basil leaves
  • 100ml gin (you can lose less if you buy into the myth that less is more when it comes the gin)
  • 2 cans of tonic

Method

  1. Boil a small amount of water in your kettle. Put the sugar into a jug with a splash of boiled water and stir until the sugar is dissolved.
  2. Slice the strawberries length ways, cut one of the limes in half and squeeze the juice into the sugar water.  Cut the other lime into slices.
  3. Add the gin and the tonic to the jug as well. Give everything a good stir.
  4. Pop a basil leaf in to each mould, along with some strawberry slices and a couple of lime slices
  5. Fill the moulds right to the brim and push a stick in each
  6. Freeze overnight

Add them to savoury salads for a burst of sweetness
Summer salads can be anything but boring. Adding strawberries to some crispy chicken and peppery baby roasties is a great way to mix up your go-to lunches.
