Events planned across Neath Port Talbot to support campaign against domestic abuse

Organisations in Neath Port Talbot are set to show their support this month for The White Ribbon campaign which urges people to speak out about domestic abuse.

More than 3,000 incidents of domestic abuse were reported to police in Neath Port Talbot during 2014/15.

The issue of domestic abuse is something the campaign urges people to make a stand against.

This year White Ribbon Day takes place on November 25.

However, events are set to take place in Neath Port Talbot throughout the month which highlight the issue of domestic abuse as well as the services available to people affected.

These include, on Thursday, November 12, Material Girls (Port Talbot and Afan Women’s Aid’s social enterprise trading fashion to tackle domestic abuse and empower women with skills and confidence) will hold a Fashion Show at Blanco’s in Port Talbot from 7.30pm.

Then on Wednesday, November 25, an awareness raising event, arranged by Neath Port Talbot Partnership supported by the Community

Safety Team, will take place at Neath Port Talbot Hospital from 10am to 2pm.

Councillor Ali Thomas OBE, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council said: “We hope as many people as possible will show their support this month for White Ribbon Day and help raise awareness across the county borough.”

Julia Lewis, Domestic Abuse Co-ordinator for the Community Safety Team, said:

“During 2014/15 over 3000 incidents of Domestic Abuse were reported to the police in Neath Port Talbot.

“Domestic Abuse is a huge issue, with everyone working together, we can organise and involve communities in preventative activities and alter the attitudes that lead to violent, abusive and controlling behaviour.”
