- Recent releases Morbius and Shang-Li and the Legend of the Ten Rings secure first and second spot of the most loved Marvel endings
- Spider-Man: Far from Home comes in last
Marvel is known to regularly release one multi-million dollar superhero movie after another, rarely disappointing the viewers. Earlier this year Morbius has been released as well as Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, which on its own brought in an estimated gross income of $930,206,858! 1
Using social listening data tools2, e-commerce retailer Ebuyer analysed 20 Marvel movies and determined the most loved and hated Marvel endings. The study shows that even though the first Spider-Man is by far the most talked out movie with 85,432 conversations online, it is not the most popular ending. Some may find Peter’s hiding of his true feelings towards Jane a disappointing ending to the movie, resulting in viewers’ mixed feelings for the movie’s ending and Spider-Man webbing himself onto eight rank. So, if it’s not the original Spider-Man movie – which is the internet’s favourite Marvel ending?

The most loved Marvel endings
While the movie is set in a time before Captain America: Civil War, the post-credits scene of Black Widow is set at a more recent time, showing Yelena visiting Nat’s grave and being approached by Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine. This little spoiler works to keep fans interested, earning the movie the fifth spot in our ranking. On fourth spot we have Captain Marvel’s post-credits scene in which a group of avengers discusses the peculiar pager that Fury left behind when suddenly Captain Marvel stands behind the group, asking what happened to Fury. With this scene, the movie is giving a short preview of Avengers: Endgame, which is clearly keeping internet users on their toes with mostly positive conversations generated online to this day.
Meeting the villain Carnage at the end of Venom brings Tom Hardy – alias Eddie Brock – onto third spot, with an overwhelming 44,122 conversations sparked online, shortly followed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on second receiving love from the internet community for its mysterious ending revealing that Shang-Chi’s rings appear to be sending a signal to an unknown place.
Morbius, released in 2022, received a lot of negative feedback from critics, however, the ending appears to be successfully keeping viewers hyped for the next Marvel adventure, leading to the movie’s post-credits being the most loved amongst fans. The ending shows The Vulture appearing, a villain who first starred in Spider-Man: Homecoming – a side effect of the Multiverse cracking!
The three Marvel endings the internet does not approve of
Now that we’ve covered the exciting endings that the internet simply loves, which are the most hated ones? The Avengers: Infinity War fights itself onto the 18th rank. Nick Fury simply fading into dust appears to leave viewers unsatisfied! Released in 2017 the post-credits scene of Thor: Ragnarok shows another spaceship appearing, leaving viewers wondering who it might be – we later find out, in Avengers: Infinity War, the ship belongs to Thanos. This suspense leads Thor’s hammer to 19th place in the ranking.
Spider-Man: Far from Home is receiving the most negative feedback online for its ending. Fans are used to jaw-dropping post-credits teasers, so the movie’s post-credits leave viewers divided, resulting in Spider-Man swinging his way onto the last spot in the ranking. In the scene viewers see Jameson, once again, declaring that Peter Parker is the reason for all the chaos and casualties. Shortly after we find out that Fury and Hill were in fact shapeshifters, leaving viewers guessing what relevance this piece of information has to other movies to come.
Marvel’s iconic post-credits scenes often give a quick teaser to another movie coming up and connect the storylines of different movies, leaving fans wanting to know more about what’s to come in the Marvel universe, but as the study shows, some scenes are more interesting than others.
Courtney Williamson, Marketing Manager at Ebuyer comments on the study: “Marvel is such a well-established brand nowadays with endless stories about superheroes and villains with which they excite generations. The study shows how most post-credits scenes are so well thought through, giving a little glimpse as to what story twists fans can expect in the future.”
